Frog and Lizard
It began as a dream and remained that way for many years. Then, in 2003 we had an amazing student teacher named Mrs Leonie Wright who took our dream and set the wheels in motion to turn it into a reality. After much consultation and writing applications, we secured the funding needed to create our "Frog Bog".
Building the Frog Bog took over 12 months and was aided by the help and support of many volunteers, including students, staff and community members.
Now, it is an outdoor classroom that promotes understanding about environmental issues at a grass roots level and allows our students to make a constructive contribution through positive ideas and activities. Primarily a storm water drainage sump, we have converted this site into a visitor-friendly habitat for frogs, lizards, birds and countless insects. We can observe a variety of native flora flower, seed and survive in this natural environment.
The Cockatoo Club members, both staff and students, work very hard to maintain the Frog Bog with activities like weeding, litter collection, seed collection, pruning, preservation of flora specimens, recording fauna sightings and monitoring water levels.
Now, there is a Science program being developed to address the issue of the declining frog population in the local area. Currambine Primary School is involved with the Australian Schools Innovation in Science, Technology and Maths Program. The project is aimed at motivating students to explore ideas relevant to their daily lives - real problems, real people and real solutions. Our Frog and Lizard Habitat plays a significant role in this exciting project.
